Preparation for Psychiatrist Assessments

When planning to see a psychiatrist, consider what difficulties you may have and what you are looking for from the consultation. Some issues can be clarified in a single consultation, but some may require multiple sessions as well as sequential medication trials before an answer can be obtained.

With regards to attention deficit disorder (ADD or ADHD) assessments, to meet NSW prescribing guidelines we need objective evidence of attention deficit issues causing difficulties in your functioning prior to the age of 12. Some options include:

  1. Evidence of previous prescription of stimulants
  2. School reports
  3. Previous psychologist, counsellor or psychiatrist reports
  4. Testimonials from friends or family. These can be written or in person.
Please be aware that a psychologist’s assessment suggesting ADHD is not a guarantee of stimulant prescription. There are many mental health issues that can contribute to attention deficit issues, and can complicate the outcomes of medication treatment. Stimulant therapy is associated with considerable benefits, as well as serious risks. Your psychiatrist will discuss with you the options for treatment as well as the potential outcomes.

Some find it beneficial to bring with themselves a support person, or someone who can provide additional information. Your psychiatrist may wish to speak with them separately in order to improve the quality of the assessment, however this will only happen with your consent.

We look forward to assisting you with your mental health needs.
